Boogie Bikes, is a company I co-founded in early 2016 with 3 other colleagues. The company was born out of the need to make urban bikers commutes simple, safe, and fun. The concept for our banner product, the LightLock, was created from my time in the University of Oregon product design program. During a bicycle accessories focused studio, I began to see a need for more efficient systems for urban commuters to get from point A to B and provide a more sustainable future for city dwellers.

The LightLock utilizes an integrated lighting system to keep your head and taillight safely stored within your bike lock. The Lock comes apart in two halves and mounts on the front and rear of your bike with a seamless and versatile mounting system. This allows riders to decrease the theft of bike and lights with integrated light locking technology and an increased bike lock impenetrability. The LightLock seeks to streamline accessory storage and refine the beauty of this utilitarian accessory.

Product / User Research

The idea was sparked by the urban commuters most essential bike purchases, lights and lock.

During my bicycle accessories studio my design centered around the urban commuters most essential bike purchases, lights and lock.

Sketch Ideation

Designing around optimizing storage and security, as city dwellers must have high-security locks and easily removable lighting while away from their bicycle.

As I began to ideate I kept the idea of storage in mind as most urban commuters don't have great storage space for their lock. I also designed around security, as city dwellers must have high-security locks and usually remove lighting while away from their bicycle.

Foam Modeling

Foam modeling used to test aesthetics and function.

The aesthetics of the product were very important to me. I wanted to take a normally utilitarian object and elevate it to something beautifully integrated on your bike.

Rough Prototyping

Using different materials to rough prototype placement, size, and lighting to see how user interaction informs design decisions.

I used many different materials to rough prototype placement, size, and lighting to see how user interaction would inform design decisions.

Prototype series 1

A fully functioning prototype that uses two swiveling connection points to engage lighting on the front and rear of your bike.

At the end of this first round prototyping process, I created a fully functioning prototype that used two swiveling connection point to engage lighting on the front and rear of your bike.

Partnership Expansion

Production & Partnership Expansion

We created multiple strategic partnerships for expansion including the Duck Store, in which we would release in 14 stores a version of our lock stripped back to our core offering, a high-security bike lock.

Where is Boogie Bikes now? Boogie is in the process of transitioning out of its phase as a product accessories company and into a new era. As times changed so did the needs of its founders and products. Though we will miss the camaraderie of Boogie, we are pleased to have established a network of over 20 manufactures, raised over $60,000 in funding, mentored and worked with local businesses, and brought the mission of streamlined and safer biking experiences to many. Currently, I am still working on the product with a small group of mentors and seeing what lies in store for the Lightlock! Long live the Boogie Lifestyle.
